Maria Montessori

      *  The Montessori Philosophy*

     The Montessori Philosophy is based upon Dr. Maria Montessori’s scientific observations of young children.  She recognized the child’s intellectual, social, and emotional needs by providing an environment with meaningful learning experiences. The purpose of a Montessori education is to help children reach their full potential in all areas of life.

     To nurture the whole child, a Montessori classroom contains the following:

The “Prepared Environment”

     The “prepared environment” invites the child to explore, problem solve, and learn through utilizing Montessori materials. This leads to self-directed learning. The child feels safe and is willing to try new things, thus, building his/her self- confidence. Children participate in both independent and group learning activities. Students learn to share, take turns, and care for the classroom materials and pets. Self respect, respect for others and the environment is a key element in the Montessori classroom.

Multi-Age Grouping

     At Dufrocq Montessori, we have two Pre-K-Kindergarten classes, two 1st-3rd-grade classes, and one 4th-5th-grade class. The multi-age grouping allows students to learn within a familiar community of peers. Older children perfect their skills by mentoring the younger children.

Montessori Materials

     Dr. Montessori’s observations led her to design a number of multi-sensory, sequential and self-correcting materials. These materials allow children to monitor their own progress, thus leading to an immediate sense of accomplishment. The students begin with the hands-on concrete manipulatives, which enables them to have a greater knowledge and understanding with abstract thinking experiences.
